FORT MYERS, Fla. – A disappointing start to the 2019 Conference USA Championship on Monday has Middle Tennessee sitting in ninth place at 13-over par (301) with 36 holes left to recover.
The Blue Raiders missed some birdie opportunities early in the day, and as the sun came out and the day wore on, they were unable to get many more to drop on the back nine.
"We didn't have the birdie putts fall early and I think that made it tough on us mentally," head coach Chris Adams said. "With a couple of those birdie putts early we could have had a lot more confidence from the start.
"From there pretty much everyone just had one or two bad swings that were kind of the story of the day."
Sophomore Sophie Burks led the way with a solid round of 1-over par (73), but managed just one birdie on a day that they were few and far between for MT.
Senior Hanley Long turned in a 2-over par 74 to sit one stroke back of Burks, getting only two birdie putts to fall on the day.
Sophomore Caroline Caudill looked to get it rolling on the back nine with birdies on 13, 14 and 15 but a setback on hole 18 saw her finish the day at 4-over par (76).
Senior Jenna Burris and freshman Catherine Caudill tallied matching scores of 6-over par 78 on the round and will look to bounce back on Tuesday to help the Raiders climb the leaderboard.
"I don't think there is any question they're disappointed with their rounds today," Adams added. "I think we can attribute some of it to just trying a little too hard.
"It's only day one though and we still have time to turn it around if we come out ready to go tomorrow."
The Blue Raiders tee off Tuesday on hole 10 beginning with Catherine Caudill at 8:50 a.m. ET.
