MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After claiming the 2019 Conference USA Championship for the first time in program history, the MT men's tennis team (18-11) will be highlighted during the NCAA tournament selection show at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 29. The team will celebrate the show and invite everyone to Lanes, Trains, and Automobiles.
"We are all excited to see where we head off to play first round," head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "As a team, we are getting back after it with our training while finishing up exams."
The Blue Raiders, who just wrapped up their come-from-behind title match win, earned an automatic bid last weekend after coming out on top of a close, 4-3 battle against No. 1-seed FAU in the 2019 C-USA championship tournament. The Blue Raiders entered as the third seed after closing out the season 15-11, 4-1 C-USA.
This will be the 12th NCAA appearance for the Raiders, the first four appearances came out of the Ohio Valley Conference and the last seven were in Sun Belt. In their first appearance, the Raiders fell 4-0 to host No. 1-seed Florida. In their last postseason run, MT was downed 4-0 by No. 21 Michigan in Oxford, Miss in 2012.
Middle Tennessee will be one of four teams selected to a regional when the field of 64 is announced during Monday's show. Of the 64 teams, 30 of them are automatic qualifiers that have won their conference tournaments. The other 34 are at-large bids. The opening two rounds will be held at host sites in the 16 different regions May 3-5, with super regional competition slated for the following weekend (May 10-11). The 2019 NCAA Championship will be contested May 16-19 at the USTA National Campus' Collegiate Center in Orlando.
Wake Forest is the defending champion. The Demon Deacons defeated Ohio State 4-2 on their home court in Winston-Salem, N.C. for their first DI men's tennis title in school history.
