Blue Raiders drop game two to Southern Miss
4/27/2019 7:11:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Southern Miss was able to capture the series win against Middle Tennessee with a strong showing in the late innings to take an 11-3 win at Reese Smith Field Saturday.
The Eagles (28-13, 16-4) scored 10 runs after the fourth inning to break open a close game and secure the series win against the Blue Raiders (16-27, 9-11).
Three Blue Raiders, led by Brett Stratinsky, had multi-hit games. Stratinsky was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Blake Benefield was 2-for-4 with a one RBI and JT Mabry also added a two-hit game.
Stratinsky's first home run of the season was a memorable one in the bottom of the third. There was no doubt about the Ruthian clout that cleared the right field fence and landed on the football practice field without Southern Miss right fielder Matt Wallner even exerting the effort to turn and give chase. There was no need. It was that certain. The two-out blast provided a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
Middle Tennessee had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Blake Benefield singled down the left field line to score Mabry, who had singled. Stratinsky provided his first bit of two-out magic with a base knock up the middle to score Aaron Antonini, who had walked, and the Blue Raiders jumped ahead 2-0.
Middle Tennessee's defense, coupled with strong starting pitching provided by Peyton Wigginton, helped keep the potent Southern Miss at bay through the first five innings. Wigginton pitched four innings of shutout baseball before the Eagles finally broke through in the fifth.
Inning-ending double plays in the second and third were pivotal – and nifty. Shortstop Tanner Parker ignited the first of two in the second inning when he fielded the ball behind the bag at second, shoveled it to Nick Carnevale, who made the turn to end the frame.
Wigginton started the second twin killing when he fielded a sharp grounder up the middle and made a perfect throw to Parker, who completed the double play to end the third frame.
Southern Miss finally broke through with one in the fifth and chased Wigginton with three in the sixth, taking a 4-3 lead in the process.
They weren't finished. The Eagles continued to add on to their lead against relief pitcher Zach Keenan when they struck for fifth in the seventh to push the advantage to 9-3. Southern Miss had four hits in the frame – all of the extra-base variety with two home runs, one triple and one double.
Middle Tennessee will look to salvage the final game of the three-game series Sunday. First pitch at Reese Smith Field is 1 p.m.
