FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's golf opened the 2019 Mason Rudolph Championship Friday with one of its best rounds of the season, firing a 2-under par 282 to put themselves in the thick of things in a field that includes five Top 50 ranked teams.
"Today was the round that we have been looking for all year," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We have been close to putting one together and it almost happened today. I am happy with the start and feel like we can still improve."
The Blue Raiders were one of the first teams off in the morning and entered the clubhouse in a tie for third before slipping down as more teams finished out their rounds.
MT now sits in ninth, but remains within four strokes of three Top 50 ranked teams and is two strokes ahead of host Vanderbilt (E), the No. 4 ranked team in the nation.
Junior Tanner Owens paced the Raiders on day one, firing a stellar 4-under par 67 to vault to the top of the leaderboard as he walked the 18th fairway. With all 90 golfers now in the clubhouse, Owens sits tied for sixth and three strokes off the lead.
Sophomore Cooper Sears, a Commodore transfer who is all too familiar with Vanderbilt Legends Club, turned in a 2-under par 69 in round one and is inside the Top 20 through 18 holes.
"What a great round today from Tanner Owens," McEntire said. "67 is his low round of the year and a really good comeback after last week. We also got a solid number from Cooper Sears today. It had to be mentally tough for him coming back here and I know he is really trying to have a good week."
Senior Marcus Byrd carded a 1-under par 70 and is tied for 27th with 36 holes to go in Franklin.
Senior James Beckner and freshman Palmer Sadlowski finished the day with matching rounds of 5-over par 77 to round out the Blue Raider lineup.
"I absolutely love James and Palmer," McEntire stated. "They are trying so hard, actually too hard, to play up to their potential. I know that they will get there and when we all five get on the same page we will do something special."
Beckner will lead things off for the Blue Raiders on Saturday with a 10:15 a.m. tee time on hole one, followed by Sadlowski, Byrd, Sears and Owens in 11-minute intervals.
Middle Tennessee will be accompanied through Vanderbilt Legends Club on day two by Marquette and Liberty, who are tied for seventh and two strokes ahead of the Raiders.
