Blue Raiders Set for C-USA Outdoor Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Middle Tennessee track and field team travels to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the 2019 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 9th to May 12th at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
Since entering Conference USA in 2014, the Blue Raiders have claimed three indoor titles in the conference (2019 – men's, 2018 – women's, 2017 – men's). The team looks to clinch their first outdoor title this weekend in Charlotte.
Blue Raiders Claim Three Weekly Honors During Outdoor Slate
Three Blue Raiders earned C-USA Athlete of the Week honors during their outdoor slate this season.
Kigen Chemadi and Fabian Edoki claimed the first honors of the outdoor slate, earning the men's track and field athlete of the week accolades.
Chemadi claimed the track honor after claiming a fifth-place finish at the Raleigh Relays in the 5,000-meter event. The distance runner notched a career-best time of 13:46.84 to earn the honor. Similarly, Edoki placed fifth the same week at the Texas Relays in the men's long jump to earn the field weekly honor. Edoki posted a distance of 8.00m in the field event.
Most recently, Abike Egbeniyi earned the C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Week accolade after claiming the champion title on the women's 400-meter dash at the Tiger Track Classic. Egbeniyi crossed the line with a time of 52.64, best of any female athlete in the conference this season.
Middle Tennessee Among the Top-15, Nationally
Entering the conference championships, Middle Tennessee has two athletes among the top-15 in the nation.
Fabian Edoki ranks seventh among national competitors in the men's long jump. Edoki claimed his best-jump of the season at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 27. The junior notched a distance of 8.00m (26' 3") in Austin, placing him among the top-10 in the nation.
Likewise, Abike Egbeniyi ranks 11th in the nation in the women's 800-meter event. Egbeniyi claimed her best-time of the season at the Tennessee Relays on April 11, posting a time of 2:04.04.
History at the C-USA Championships
Most recently, the men's team claimed the indoor champion title in 2019, as the Blue Raiders finished with 143 points. Head Coach Dean Hayes was named the C-USA Men's Head Coach of the Year and Jacob Choge had the highest individual point total of any male athlete.
In 2018, the women's team claimed the indoor C-USA title with 127 combined points. The team claimed four champion titles, including three individual (Cecilia Francis – 60m, Abike Egbeniyi – 400m, Agnes Abu – 800m) and one relay title (Amponsah, Abu, Assafuah, Egbeniyi – 4x400). With the title, Agnes Abu earned the high point scorer of the meet honor as head coach Dean Hayes earned Coach of the Year accolades. After her impressive stint, Abike Egbeniyi earned the C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Year honor.
Similarly, in 2017 the men's team claimed their first C-USA indoor title with 130 points. The men's track team claimed three individual champion title with two from Jacob Choge (3,000m, 5,000m) and Solomon Afful (200m). Meanwhile, Kigen Chemadi claimed the Freshman of the Year honor while coach Hayes was named the C-USA Men's Coach of the Year.
