LEXINGTON, Ky. – A pair of par or better rounds on the day got the Middle Tennessee Women's Golf team off to a strong start at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on Friday, with Sophie Burks and Madison Smith leading their squad to a 4-over par 292 and fourth place team standing thru 18 holes.
"We seemed to have a lot more confidence today than we did last week," Head Coach Chris Adams said. "We did leave some shots out there by not making some very makeable birdies, but I like their attitudes and I know we are going to keep coming out and giving our all each day. I'm very proud of the way everyone on our team finished today!"
Burks, who was one stroke off her career low with her team-leading 2-under par 70, currently sits tied for third in the field of 75 golfers and is just one stroke back of the individual co-leaders.
Smith, continuing the solid strides made so far in the early portion of her sophomore campaign, turned in a career-low even par 72 on the day and joins Burks in the Top 10 after the first day.
"Sophie had a really good round today and Madison had a very solid day as well," Adams added. "Sophie struggled a little with the driver early on but kept her focus and Madison is just the most steady player with such a laid back attitude, she seemed to just be strolling around out there today."
The Blue Raider trio of Catherine Caudill, Caroline Caudill and Savannah Quick each check in after day one in a tie for 26th after matching rounds of 3-over par 75 while freshman Molly Bebelaar carded a 4-over 76 that places her in the top half of the field in a tie for 34th place.
Middle Tennessee will tee off alongside Rutgers (+7) and Eastern Kentucky (+12) on Saturday as they look to push back into the top group that currently includes Kentucky (-3), Penn State (-1) and WKU (+1).
Bebelaar will lead things off at 9:15 a.m. on the first tee box, followed by Caroline Caudill, Catherine Caudill, Smith and Burks.
Quick, competing as an individual in Lexington, will tee off at 9:42 a.m. on the 10th hole.
