MURFREESBORO, Tenn.— Middle Tennessee softball stepped up in competition Saturday to play its first game of the fall against a non-junior college, falling to Trevecca by a score of 6-5 in 10 innings.
Corrina Dodd got the ball to start her second game of the fall — she also started the first game of the fall against Calhoun Community College. Dodd threw three scoreless innings, only giving up one hit in 10 batters faced.
"Today was the best outing [Corrina's] had," MT Head Coach Jeff Breeden said. "She's had a little back issue, but she's been able to do more bullpen time, and she did a good job."
The Blue Raiders took an early lead on a Jocelynn De La Cruz RBI single to right-center, which scored Sydney Heath from second base. MT then extended its lead to 2-0 courtesy of a Lexi Cushing no-doubter home run over the left field fence.
Trevecca's bats finally got going in the sixth, as the Trojans plated four runs on four hits. A Kelci Hill triple helped the Blue Raiders get a run back, but Trevecca took a 4-3 lead into the seventh.
After the next two innings were scoreless, the Trojans and Blue Raiders added two runs apiece to make the score 6-5 after nine frames.
"We can't go through three innings and not get a baserunner," Breeden said of the corrections his team needs to make before taking the field next.
"They're a good team, but if their pitcher is going to pitch to the outside, our hitters have to make an adjustment, and we didn't do that."
The Blue Raiders will be back at home for one more game in the fall, hosting Carson-Newman on Oct. 6 at 12 p.m. before closing out the fall at Tennessee on Oct. 11.
