MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Middle Tennessee track and field teams claimed seven top-three finishes this weekend at the University of Kentucky's Jim Green Invitational.
"It was our return to University of Kentucky and we hadn't been there for several years," said head coach Dean Hayes, "so that made it fun."
On day one, the Blue Raiders saw six top-ten finishes in the men's high jump, women's long jump women's 600 meter run and the men's 200 meter dash. Zabrion Whatley and Keyon Hugle both qualified for the men's 60 meter dash semifinals, and Whatley continued to the finals on Saturday where he placed seventh overall (6.99s).
The women had an excellent turnout in the 600 meter run as well on Friday with three runners finishing top 10. Patience Akanwogba took third place overall with a time of 1:35.11, Agnes Abrocquah claimed fourth place with a time of 1:35.40 and Quanisha Marshall finished ninth with a time of 1:39.07.
Jacob Choge claimed first place in both the men's 800 meter run (1:50.38) and the men's 1 mile run (4:06.20). Brian Rono followed closely behind in both events, taking second in the 800 meter run (1:52.09) and fourth in the 1 mile (4:10.90).
"Jacob was probably the star of the show for us because he won the 1 mile and the 800 meter," Hayes said. "He ran a really good 800 meters. Ultimately, he'll be ready when it's time for the NCAA 5,000 meter."
Freshman Titus Lagat placed fifth overall in the 800-meter, followed by Stephen Mengich in 10th. Joice Jebor had a podium finish in the women's 1 mile run, claiming third place with a time of 4:55.00.
Two Blue Raiders claimed top-10 finishes in jumping events. Kyle Teague took ninth in the men's high jump (1.79m) and Akera Benton claimed third in the women's long jump (5.85m) and fifth in the women's triple jump (11.95m).
"It was good to get back to it with a nice size team," Hayes said. "Next weekend we go to Vanderbilt and we'll try to put it together with as many people as we can."
