HOUSTON, Texas – Middle Tennessee struggled through the second half of the round to post a score of 14-over par 302 on Monday, falling to 12th place through 36 holes at the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston.
With 18 holes to play, the Blue Raiders find themselves behind all three Conference USA opponents in the field on a week where they hoped to see positive signs of where they stand in the league ranks.
"That was a tough round to watch, we just did not have much out there today," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We were very sloppy with our wedges and in course management. We had a bunch of big numbers on the scorecard and when you aren't making any birdies your just can't afford that."
Senior Tanner Owens led the way once again with a second consecutive round of even par 72 to move into a tie for 19th while freshman Mattias Varjun bounced back with a strong round of 1-over par 73.
The pair accounted for five of MT's seven birdies and were the only Blue Raiders with more than one birdie on the day.
Sophomore Palmer Sadlowski shot 5-over par on the day while upperclassmen Ilari Saulo and Cooper Sears shot 8-over and 10-over, respectively.
Freshman Steven Haremski, playing as an individual, shot 6-over par on Monday and enters the final day ahead of both Saulo and Sears on the tournament leaderboard.
"I really need Ilari to step up to get our team where we need to go," McEntire added. "We knew that Cooper was going to be rusty and I expect him to be that way for a few more tournaments. I did love the bounce back from Mattias, he had a solid round today.
"Now the plan is to put a good round together tomorrow and get some momentum for our next tournament."
Middle Tennessee concludes their time in Houston with 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8:00 a.m. on the tenth tee box.
