MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — Middle Tennessee softball picked right back up where it left off yesterday, outscoring opponents 15-4 in two games on Saturday and pushing its weekend record to 4-0.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 7, MIAMI (OH) 2
» Miami (OH) entered play on Saturday with a 7-5 record, including wins over Iowa and Florida Atlantic on Friday.
» Lexi Cushing opened the scoring in the third inning with a three-run homer to left field, scoring Summer Burgess and Kelci Hill. It was Cushing's third homer in as many games.
» The Redhawks answered in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to trim MT's lead to one run.
» After two scoreless innings by both teams, the Blue Raiders pushed across four insurance runs in the seventh to win the game.
» Claire Smith's sacrifice bunt attempt scored a pinch-running Savannah Freeman, and Jocelynn De La Cruz homered three batters later to plate three more Blue Raiders.
» Mia Marinakis faced the minimum in three of her seven innings pitched to finish off her second career — and second consecutive — complete game.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 8, SETON HALL 2
» Seton Hall came into its second game of the day with a 2-1 mark on the weekend, with wins coming against Sacred Heart and South Alabama but a loss to Florida Atlantic.
» Kaylee Richetto singled home De La Cruz in the third inning to open the scoring.
» MT then tacked on four runs in the fourth behind Smith and Sydney Heath RBIs, along with a score on a wild pitch.
» The Pioneers cut into the lead with a solo home run in the fourth and fifth innings, but that was all they'd push across.
» Another MT run scored due to a wild pitch, and Heath notched her third RBI of the game in the sixth inning.
» Smith scored in the seventh to make it a six-run advantage, which the Pioneers couldn't overcome.
» Corrina Dodd gave up only four hits in five innings pitched, leading to her second win of the season.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on the importance of scoring insurance runs against Miami (OH): "This is all about getting ready for conference play, and in conference play we're going to need some insurance from time to time. There's going to be some times where somebody scores on us in the seventh and we'll need to answer back. Our kids are playing good late in games so far this year."
» Breeden on Corrina Dodd's performance in the circle vs. Seton Hall: "She did good in the count. She threw hard today. Those home runs she gave up were both solos, and we can deal with that. I thought she had a really good outing today, probably her best outing of the spring."
» Utility player Mia Marinakis on what she brings to the team in being able to pitch and hit: "I relate to both sides, so I can understand what it's like to be a pitcher, and I understand what it's like to be a hitter. It's tough to switch hats sometimes. It helps when I'm pitching because I know what I'd be looking for if I was a hitter."
» Marinakis on hitting her first home run at MT yesterday: "It felt great. I've been struggling lately, so I've just kept trying to swing at good pitches, stay relaxed and not try too hard."
