MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Blue Raider junior Sophie Burks has been named Conference USA Female Golfer of the Week on Wednesday after knocking off multiple Top 100 ranked golfers at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami.
The Montgomery, Ala., native finished tied for 31st in a very challenging field that included six teams ranked in the Top 50 nationally and nine individuals ranked in the Top 100 nationally plus 20 more inside the Top 250.
Of the nine individuals ranked in the Top 100 in Division I Women's Golf, Burks defeated three – No. 27 Kaitlin Milligan (Oklahoma), No. 59 Kristyna Frydlova (Miami), and No. 90 Hollie Muse (Arizona) – and tied another – No. 24 Isabella Fierro (Oklahoma State).
Burks led the Blue Raiders on the week in every category except birdies, ranking tied for fourth in the field of 77 in Par 3 scoring (+1, 3.08) and tied for eighth in total pars (34).
"This was such a tough field we had to face this week and on a difficult course in very challenging conditions, but Sophie had a solid week for us and really battled with some of the best players in the country," Head Coach Chris Adams said. "I hope that she and our whole team can use this as motivation to continue improving as we navigate the rest of our spring schedule and prepare for conference."
Now in her third campaign as a Blue Raider, Burks leads Middle Tennessee on the year in stroke average (73.4) and is collecting her first career C-USA weekly honor.
The Blue Raiders are back in action next week at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational hosted by C-USA foe UTSA on March 10-11.
