MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee added three heralded prep standouts during the first day of the NCAA Early Signing Period Wednesday, Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell has announced.
The Lady Raiders added Meioshe Mason, a 6-foot-4 center at Lebanon High School in Lebanon, Tenn.; Lanae Riley, a 6-foot-2 forward from Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio; and Ta'Mia Scott, a 6-foot guard at Clarksville Northwest High School in Clarksville, Tenn.
"This is a great day for Middle Tennessee women's basketball," Insell said. "We are adding three outstanding young ladies and their families to our Blue Raider family. I want to thank our staff for the hard work and dedication they put in to making sure this class came together the way it did."
Coupled with last year's highly-touted class that included five prep signees, Insell said it may be well be the best back-to-back classes in his 17 years leading the program.
"I don't know that we have had back-to-back classes this talented with young ladies who can come in and make an immediate impact," Insell said. "It may be the best back-to-back classes we have had in my tenure here. Adding these three freshmen with the five we signed last year, we have a youthful roster that is very talented."
Mason was one of the vital cogs in Lebanon's 2021 run to the TSSAA Class 3A state championship game. The 6-foot-4 post player led the team to a 30-5 record on the way to the District 9-AAA and Region 5-AAA championships, as well as a state tournament runner-up finish. Mason earned all-region and all-district honors along with a spot on the Tennessee Best of the Best Showcase. She nearly averaged a double-double with 8.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game for coach Cory Barrett.
"We are very excited about (Mason) and what her future looks like," Insell said. "Getting a local player from a solid high school program was very important to us. She plays with a lot of aggression and has an ability to be a dominant post player long term. She provides a physical low block presence."
Riley is a dominant player at highly-regarded Archbishop Hoban. The combo forward averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and two steals per game for well-respected prep coaches Pam and Willie Davis. She also played at a high level in travel ball, starring for Sports City U and coach Bryce McKee. Riley was an All-Ohio first team All-State selection and was named to the Akron Beacon Best of Greater Akron All-Star team.
"(Riley) is an elite level combo forward who can play multiple positions," Insell said. "She can play out on the floor, facing the basket or with her back to the basket. She has an ability to score the basketball many ways whether it be shooting the 3, driving to the rim or posting up and scoring around the basket. She has great vision, runs the floor like a guard, and has great passing ability. She just does all of the little things well.
"Her game reminds us of (Lady Raider great) Ebony Rowe when Ebony was coming out of high school. We are very excited about her."
Scott led Northwest High School to a 25-4 record as a junior last season while averaging 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. With Scott leading the way, Northwest captured its first district regular-season and tournament titles since 2003. Scott was named to the Class AAA All-State Team and she was also the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle All-Area Player of the Year.
Scott, who plays travel basketball for Tennessee Flight in the EYBL, was also named All-Tournament at two of the most prestigious summer tournaments in the nation – the Run for the Roses and Battle of the 'Boro. Cory Barrett is her travel basketball coach.
"(Scott) is an elite level perimeter player with great size who can play the 1, 2 or 3," Insell said. "She has great length and is a three-way scorer who can score the ball in so many ways. (Scott) has a big, big future."
