Lady Raiders claim 65-47 win
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee took its smothering team defense to historic proportions in a convincing 65-47 win against longtime rival Tennessee Tech here Monday night.
The Lady Raiders (4-0) made history on the defensive end as they held Tennessee Tech to 47 points, marking the first time in program history that a Middle Tennessee team has held four straight opponents to less than 50 points.
Middle Tennessee entered the game ranked No. 14 nationally for scoring defense, allowing just 47 points per game.
"These young ladies have bought in on the defensive end and they take great pride in team defense. It's fun to watch," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "I'm really pleased with our execution on the defensive end, but the encouraging thing is we can still get better. We are still not where we need to be by a longshot."
The Lady Raiders stormed out to a strong start and never relented as they used balanced scoring and airtight team defense to take control of the game in the first half.
Freshman standout Jalynn Gregory led the attack with 15 points, including 3-of-6, from beyond the arc. Alexis Whittington had another stellar all-around game with 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 4-of-4 from beyond 3-point range. Whittington's stat sheet stuffing performance also including a game-high nine rebounds, three steals and an assist.
Courtney Whitson tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Courtney Blakely and Anastasiia Boldyreva contributed seven points each with Boldyreva also contributing three blocked shots.
"We have a lot of different parts," Insell said. "The biggest thing we have is great team chemistry. These young ladies love playing together, and they share the ball. There's room for improvement but it is early, and we are playing a lot of young players. They will continue to improve."
Gregory and Whittington keyed Middle Tennessee's strong start as they combined for nearly half of the team's 35 first-half points. Gregory poured in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting before halftime, and Whittington added eight points on 2-of-3 shooting.
Middle Tennessee demonstrated a defensive showcase in the first half to help spark its double-digit lead. The Golden Eaglettes (2-2) were 1-of-13 from the field to end the first half as Middle Tennessee staked claim to a 35-19 advantage at intermission.
Tennessee Tech was 6-of-28 from the field in the first half, including 1-of-16 from beyond the arc.
Middle Tennessee held Tennessee Tech to 27 percent shooting from the field (16-of-59), including just 3-of-29 (10 percent) from 3-point range. The Lady Raiders forced 16 turnovers and scored 17 points off of those miscues.
The Lady Raiders will look to start 5-0 for the first time since 1995 when they face Marquette in the Daytona Beach Invitational Friday. Tipoff is 11 AM (CT).
