Malashka adds double-double in C-USA opener
SAN ANTONIO – A 13-day layoff between games did little to slow Middle Tennessee's momentum as the Lady Raiders claimed an 85-56 triumph at UTSA in the C-USA opener for both teams here Thursday.
Junior Courtney Whitson highlighted the Lady Raider win with a dazzling performance. Whitson established career highs for points, field goals and 3-pointers to lead the Lady Raiders. Whitson poured in a game-high 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including a sizzling 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
"My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball in scoring situations, and I was able to knock down some shots," Whitson said. "We did a good job of running our offenses and getting people open as a team. The biggest thing is to get this first conference win on the road.
Middle Tennessee (9-2, 1-0) entered the game ranked in the Top 30 nationally for 3-pointers, averaging almost 10 per game, and connected on 14 on the way to the double-digit triumph. The 85 points were a season high for the Lady Raiders. The Lady Raiders had 20 assists on 30 made field goals.
"We had a good week of practice coming off of the break, and our young ladies carried that into the game," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "(Whitson) gave us a huge spark with a strong all-around performance. Overall, I thought we played well as a team and it's certainly a good way to start conference play on the road."
Kseniya Malashka continued her exceptional play off the Lady Raider bench, providing her second double-double as a Lady Raider with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Jalynn Gregory continued her breakout campaign with a strong all-around game that included 14 points and career highs for rebounds (7) and assists (7).
Alexis Whittington tied her career high for steals with five and added seven points, five rebounds and five assists with no turnovers in 34 minutes of action.
The game was tied 22-22 after one quarter, but Middle Tennessee took control of the game in the second quarter and carried a 40-30 advantage into the locker room at intermission. Efficient shooting and exceptional defense sparked a 10-1 run as the Lady Raiders turned a one-point advantage into a double-digit halftime lead.
The Lady Raiders forced nine UTSA turnovers over the final 7:38 of the second quarter and held the Roadrunners without a field goal during the same span. On the offensive end, Middle Tennessee knocked down 7-of-16 attempts, including four 3-pointers, to start pulling away.
Whitson highlighted the uprising with 18 of her game-high 31 in the first half. The junior forward was 7-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range in the first two quarters.
