Blue Raiders Unable to Hold Off Old Dominion

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Four players recorded double-digit kills, however, the Middle Tennessee volleyball team was unable to hold off Old Dominion Monday afternoon in Alumni Memorial Gym. Old Dominion came back from being down 2-1 to win the match, 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 13-15).
Kayla Henley led the Blue Raiders with 16 kills, followed by Samira Lawson Body with 14 kills. Amelia Van Der Werff was also a highlight for Middle Tennessee offensively, hitting .522 with 14 kills. Taylor Eisert set a career-high with 51 assists. Marley Banton recorded 13 digs. The sophomore has recorded 10 or more digs in four out of fives match this season.
After dropping the first set, the Blue Raiders came out strong and took an early 9-4 lead. The Blue Raiders would hold the lead throughout the set, but the Monarchs would later tie the match at 17. Middle Tennessee would then go on an 8-2 run to close the set and tie the match at one.
The Blue Raiders opened strong in the third set with a 6-2 lead and held the Monarchs throughout the set. Middle Tennessee would consistently have a two or more-point lead during the entire set. The Monarchs would cut the deficit to 19-17, but the Blue Raiders would respond and would take the set 25-20 to go up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set remained tightly contested in the first half, with the teams even at 13 before Old Dominion used a 5-0 run to push the match to a fifth set. The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair, but the Monarchs eventually used three kills to clinch the match.
We will be back in action next Sunday and Monday as we travel to Charlotte to take on the 49ers.
