MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Mia Marinakis pitched a gem, and Hailey Bosley slugged her first career home run, but Middle Tennessee (8-10) fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader and will play in the third place game of the MTSU Invitational Sunday at 10 a.m.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0, ILLINOIS STATE 1
» Illinois State entered Saturday afternoon's game with the Blue Raiders with a record of 9-4. The Redbirds were beaten in a walk-off by Dayton before beating North Dakota State on Friday.
» The Redbirds threatened in the first inning with a couple of one-out singles, but Kaylee Richetto put an end to the scoring opportunity with a double play by stepping on third base then firing the ball over to Lexi Cushing at first base for the third out.
» MT came close to pushing a run across in the third, as Amaya Harris beat the shortstop's throw for an infield single, followed by a double by Summer Burgess, but the two Blue Raiders were stranded in scoring position.
» Marinakis started in the circle and tossed perfect innings in the second, third, fourth, and sixth.
» The junior from Murrieta, California also hit in the fourth spot of the lineup and produced MT's second scoring threat of the game with a double to left-center in the fifth inning. Jaya Herring checked in to run for Marinakis and stole third.
» The game continued without a score until the seventh inning, when the Redbirds scored on a passed ball with two outs.
» Richetto smoked a single down the left field line, but the Blue Raiders couldn't score in the seventh, so Illinois State earned the first seed in the evening's semifinal games.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 3, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 8
» North Dakota State was the three-seed in the MTSU Invitational semifinal round after a 1-2 showing in the round-robin portion of the weekend.
» The Bison jumped out to an early lead with three runs through just a third of an inning.
» Cushing answered with a double to right-center, but she was stranded in scoring position in the bottom of the first.
» A fielding error by the Blue Raiders led to a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, and North Dakota State led 5-0 before MT could bat for a second time.
» When the Blue Raiders did step up to bat for their second turn at the dish in game two, they cut the Bison lead to two runs, as Hailey Bosley, a junior catcher from Yorba Linda, California making her first start of the season, slugged her first career home run to score three for her team.
» Richetto singled through the left side, then Claire Smith singled on a bunt attempt to set up the three-run blast for Bosley.
» MT withstood a fourth inning threat, as the Bison advanced a runner to third but didn't score. The Blue Raiders followed with a scoring threat of their own with Smith advancing to third on a Lani Rodriguez double, but no runs came across in the frame.
» Kailey Ahlstrom entered in relief in the second inning for the Blue Raiders, and she enjoyed a three-strikeout inning in the fifth.
» North Dakota State added insurance in the top of the seventh with three runs, one of them unearned.
» Burgess singled in the infield, but the MT rally was short-lived, and the Bison advanced to Sunday's MTSU Invitational championship game.
