MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — An outstanding pitching performance and timely hitting in the fourth inning lifted Middle Tennessee (9-10) to a third place finish in the MTSU Invitational, its first home regular season tournament since 2008.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 3, DAYTON 0
» Illinois State won via a walk-off homer in the seventh inning of Saturday night's semifinal matchup against Dayton, so the Flyers were pitted against the Blue Raiders in Sunday morning's third place game.
» After a one-out walk, Hailey Bosley threw out a would-be base-stealer at second base to end the first try at the plate for the Flyers.
» Amaya Harris singled in the bottom of the second for the game's first hit and stole second base, but she was stranded in scoring position.
» The third inning was highlighted by great defensive plays by the Blue Raider middle infielders. Lani Rodriguez started off the frame with a dive to her left to snag a line drive, and Summer Burgess dove to her right to do the same and end the frame.
» Kelci Hill led off the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle. A couple of batters later, Mia Marinakis singled to centerfield, and Jaya Herring checked in to pinch run and steal second. Harris logged her second hit of the day with a two-run double and was later brought home for MT's third run on a Claire Smith infield single.
» The Blue Raiders threatened again in the sixth, as Harris walked and advanced to third on a single down the right field line by Smith, but no runs came across.
» Rodriguez showed off her defensive abilities to end the game in the top of the seventh by snagging another line drive and throwing over to Lexi Cushing at first to help Corrina Dodd finish off her second career shutout.
» Dodd went all seven innings, striking out four and allowing just three hits. The junior right-hander now has a team-high ERA of 0.92 and 25 strikeouts through 30.1 innings pitched in the 2021 season.
» Freshman Danielle Taitt made her first career start at first base on Sunday morning against the Flyers.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on Corrina Dodd's game in the circle: "Dodd was really good in her command all day. She had her riseball and changeup working well to keep Dayton's hitters off-balance. I thought our defense played solid behind her today as well."
» Breeden on preparing for the season's first midweek contest: "We'll continue to try and find combinations of players that work well together. In two weeks, we need to have all the combinations and pieces figured out as we go into our conference slate. We'll continue to preach hitting line drives, good pitching and good defense."
» Pitcher Corrina Dodd on her approach to Sunday's game against the Flyers: "As far as before the game, our approach was the same as any other game: go after each and every batter."
» Dodd on playing in front of the home crowd this weekend for the first time all season: "This weekend was very refreshing being home and having our fans cheer us on. The stadium looks great and is certainly something the team is proud of."
