MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Kaylee Richetto bunted home Summer Burgess to lift Middle Tennessee to a walk-off win over Western Illinois, but the Blue Raiders (10-11) dropped game two of the day to Mercer in six innings.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 3, WESTERN ILLINOIS 2
» Western Illinois entered the second of three games played at Blue Raider Softball Field on Saturday with an 0-1 record to the weekend after dropping a 15-3 decision in five innings to Mercer.
» Corrina Dodd started in the circle and got nine of the first 10 batters she faced out, with the exception of a two-out solo homer in the second inning.
» MT answered in the third inning, as Burgess led off with a double and came around to score on a Kelci Hill double in the ensuing at bat.
» After the Leathernecks threatened to score with a runner on second base in the top of the sixth, Lexi Cushing gave her team a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to right-center, her third of the season.
» Western Illinois wasn't done fighting yet, though, as the Leathernecks scored an unearned run with two outs to tie the game and give the host Blue Raiders a chance to walk it off.
» Burgess tied her career high for hits (4) and doubles (2) in a game when she led off the seventh with a double to left field. After Hill laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Burgess over to third, Kaylee Richetto put the Blue Raiders in the win column by bunting to the right side and scoring Burgess.
» Dodd pitched all seven innings, struck out three and gave up just one earned run in what was her third complete game of the season.
» Hill's 3-for-3 performance against the Leathernecks put her one hit shy of tying her career high for hits in a game.
» Burgess's fifth inning single gave her 208 career singles to pass Precious Birdsong (2015-18) for the most in MT program history, and her seventh inning double was career hit No. 243, tying her with Birdsong for the most hits all-time. She'll have the opportunity to hold the hit record for her own when MT takes on Western Illinois and Mercer again on Sunday.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, MERCER 10 (6 Inn.)
» Mercer's hot offense carried over into its second game of the day, as the Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
» The Blue Raiders got a run back in the bottom half of the first, as Burgess's leadoff walk came around to score on a Cushing fielder's choice.
» Mercer then added to its lead with a pair of runs in the second inning.
» Another leadoff batter came around to score for the Blue Raiders, as Richetto doubled in the third and later scored courtesy of Gracie Kirby's RBI double in her first start of the season.
» The Bears added three in the fourth and two in the sixth to end both teams' second game of the day early.
» Gretchen Mead had a solid outing out of the Blue Raider bullpen, tossing 2.1 innings without giving up an earned run.
