STATESBORO, Ga. – Middle Tennessee landed right in the middle of the pack at the end of day one at the Schenkel Invitational, posting a team round of 1-under par 287 to slot into seventh place out of 13 teams.
The Blue Raiders are within five strokes of a quartet of competitors in Furman (-6), Campbell (-4), College of Charleston (-3) and Florida Gulf Coast (-3) while No. 21 NC State (-16) and No. 40 Georgia Southern (-13) are well out in front.
"I'm happy with the round we put together today," Head Coach Mark McEntire said . "It was good to see the red numbers we got from Kevin (Jegers) and Connor (McKay), and Mike (Barnard) and Tanner (Owens) gave us solid rounds as well and are very close to putting it all together."
Connor McKay continued his stellar spring with a team low 2-under par 70, using four straight birdies on the front nine to fuel his 10th consecutive under par round to start the spring and share the 14th spot on the leaderboard.
Freshman Kevin Jegers turned in his fifth round of par or better over 10 collegiate rounds on Friday, carding a 1-under 71 to sneak inside the Top 20 after 18 holes.
Tanner Owens and Michael Barnard are within striking distance of their Top 20 teammates, posting matching rounds of 1-over par 73 on Friday.
Owen Stamper went without a birdie in round one to turn in a 4-over par 76 and will look to bounce back on Saturday as MT eyes a move up the leaderboard.
"We're supposed to get some bad weather tomorrow, but our goal is to play the Par 5s better and move up the leaderboard," McEntire added.
Round two is currently set to begin at 9:00 a.m. ET on Saturday. Live scoring can be followed at Golfstat.com.
