MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee continued its hot streak at home when the Blue Raiders (13-11) cruised to an 11-2 win over Jacksonville State in MT's first midweek contest of the 2021 season.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 11, JACKSONVILLE STATE 2 (6 Inn.)
» Jacksonville State entered Wednesday's game with a record of 5-13 after winning one of three at Eastern Kentucky in its third OVC series of the season.
» Reigning Conference USA and TSWA Pitcher of the Week Corrina Dodd earned the start in the circle for the Blue Raiders, tossed five innings and gave up two runs on a homer in the second inning. Dodd collected another win to move to 5-0 on the season.
» MT answered in its half of the second by taking advantage of free passes given by Gamecock pitchers.
» Mia Marinakis singled with one out and was replaced on the basepaths by Jaya Herring. After a Ryan King single, Herring stole third and advanced 60 more feet for the Blue Raiders' first run on a JSU throwing error.
» Lani Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two runs apiece. Kaylee Richetto drew the fourth consecutive walk later in the inning to score Nahri Tath-Slezak and put MT in front on the scoreboard for good.
» Summer Burgess then advanced home on a wild pitch, and that completed the four-run second inning for the Blue Raiders.
» MT then scored three to distance themselves in the third inning, starting with a King single that scored Amaya Harris, who led off the frame with a walk. After Herring scored her second run, Tath-Slezak's sacrifice bunt plated Savannah Freeman, and that made it 7-2 after three innings.
» Neither team threatened in the fourth or fifth innings, but the Gamecocks had the tying run on deck in the top of the sixth.
» Freshman Danielle Taitt entered out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and caused a 1-2-3 inning ending double play to earn her first career save.
» Taitt's classmate Shelby Sargent singled on a bunt for her first career hit, and Burgess scored as the Blue Raiders executed on the basepaths perfectly on the next play. Sargent came around to score and make it a seven-run advantage on a ball hit in the infield by Claire Smith.
» Taitt then finished off Wednesday afternoon's game in the bottom of the frame, as a double to left-center, her first career hit, gave her team a nine-run advantage to invoke the mercy rule.
» King's 2-for-3 day at the plate gave her three multi-hit performances this season.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on Danielle Taitt's impact on Wednesday's game: "Danielle's very stoic. It doesn't matter who she plays against. She pitched against Missouri and did very good against them, and she doesn't seem to get rattled. She comes in there, and we're in a jam with the bases loaded with one out and induces a ground ball. We knew in summer ball that she'd make an impact, and she's playing well."
» Breeden on this weekend's series against Georgia Tech: "We now have our stadium, so I feel comfortable bringing big teams in, and we're going to continue to do that. We searched them out because we want to get ready for Charlotte, Western Kentucky and Marshall, and I think those three games this weekend are going to help us do that."
» Pitcher Danielle Taitt on entering in a big spot out of the bullpen to earn the save: "I just tried to stay loose. I knew my team had my back, so I just knew I needed to stay relaxed and do what I do."
» Taitt on hitting the game-ending double: "Coach Hawkins always says 'Be you. You are enough.' I just had to stay within myself. My main goal is to help my team every time out."
