LEESBURG, Fla. — Middle Tennessee saw an improvement in its offense on day one of the The Spring Games, as the Blue Raiders (3-7) dropped game one to Stetson before ending their five-game skid with a win over Toledo.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, STETSON 9
» Stetson jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the top of the first.
» The Hatters then extended their lead with a bases loaded walk in the next inning.
» MT fought back in the third inning, as Summer Burgess led off with an infield single then came around to score on a stolen base attempt by Kelci Hill.
» In the top of the fifth, Stetson threatened again with a leadoff single on a bunt. Catcher Ryan King threw out two would-be base stealers in the inning and helped keep the Hatters from adding to their lead.
» Stetson scored again in the sixth inning, starting off the frame with a single followed by a two-run homer.
» King then came up big for her team in the bottom of the sixth as she plated Lexi Cushing, who led off the inning with a double.
» A sacrifice fly in the seventh inning gave the Hatters their ninth run of the game and was the final tally in Saturday afternoon's meeting.
» Cushing's sixth inning double and subsequent score gave her 318 total bases reached in her career at Middle Tennessee. That number gives her sole possession of the program's all-time record.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 10, TOLEDO 2
» Toledo's first game of the day was a 6-3 win over Stetson.
» Mia Marinakis started as MT's designated player in game two of the day, and she made an immediate impact with an RBI single to bring home Cushing with two outs in the top of the first.
» After both pitchers tossed a perfect second inning, it was Cushing's turn to collect an RBI, bringing home Burgess with a two-out single through the left side in the third inning.
» The Rockets cut MT's lead in half by scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the third.
» MT then scored one run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to put some distance on the scoreboard between itself and Toledo.
» Lani Rodriguez scored a pinch-running Savannah Freeman in the fourth, Marinakis got her second RBI of the game as Burgess got her second run of the game in the fifth, and Burgess earned an RBI of her own in the sixth to score a pinch-running Jaya Herring.
» Rodriguez collected a second RBI and scored a pinch-running Claire Smith as the Blue Raiders added insurance in the top of the seventh. MT wasn't done scoring in the seventh, though, as King earned her third hit and brought home Amaya Harris.
» Later in the inning, Nahri Tath-Slezak scored Jocelynn De La Cruz, and Kelci Hill doubled to scored King and Tath-Slezak, making it a 10-1 game.
» The Rockets scored one more run in the seventh, but the Blue Raiders finished off the 10-2 win.
» King started behind the dish for MT against the Rockets and went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to tie her career high for hits in a single game.
» Corrina Dodd started in the circle and tossed a complete game, the 10th of her career, and struck out a season-high five batters.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on his team bouncing back from a loss to win over Toledo: "I was very disappointed in the way we played against Stetson, but I was glad to see the team respond."
» Breeden on the changes made to the offensive approach that led to success: "This week in practice we worked a lot on staying behind the ball and trying to hit line drives. We also worked on a lot of situational hitting in practice to try and get more timely hits."
» Catcher Ryan King on the team's ability to bounce back and win over Toledo: "In the late innings of the Stetson game, we started to hit the ball a little bit better, and I think that gave us the confidence to go in and turn things around in the next game against Toledo."
» King on what she's doing to succeed at the plate: "I've been working really hard on my hitting at practice, and I told myself when I was given the chance to get back out there I would take advantage of it. I just put myself in a positive frame of mind and tried to help my team succeed today."
