SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Middle Tennessee baseball team split a pair of extra-inning games in Saturday's Conference USA doubleheader at UTSA. The Blue Raiders (16-13-1, C-USA 5-5-1) have now played in nine extra-inning games this season and have a record of 4-4-1.
GAME 1: MT 5, UTSA 3
The Blue Raiders took the first game of the twin ticket, 5-3, powered by an RBI double off the bat of junior Fausto Lopez that gave MT the lead in the final inning.
UTSA hopped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second, but were blanked by Blue Raider starting pitcher Peyton Wigginton through the next four innings.
In the final scheduled inning Wigginton allowed three hits and a run that would push the game in to extra innings and earn the Raider lefty a no decision.
The Franklin native pitched 6.1 innings, allowed three earned runs, walked just two and struck out four before handing the ball over to fellow lefty David Zoz.
Zoz worked his way out of a based loaded jam to give MT a chance in extra frames.
The Blue Raiders started off the eighth inning with a single from eight-hole hitter Nathan Sanders.
Sanders advanced to second on a sac bunt from Hunter Sullivan, to put the go-ahead run in scoring position for Lopez.
The junior-transfer lined a double off the left field wall and brought around Sanders from second to boost the Raiders over UTSA, 4-3.
Lopez went 2-for-6 at the plate combined, scored twice, and knocked in three of the Blue Raiders' seven runs.
Cole Escher drove in Lopez with an RBI single to add an insurance run to the Blue Raider lead at 5-3.
Zoz wrapped up the game in the bottom of the eighth and finished his second day of work after 1.2 innings pitched and punched out a pair.
After picking up the win today, Zoz is now tied for the team lead with starting pitcher Aaron Brown. Each has four W's on the season.
GAME 2: UTSA 3, MT 2
In the second game, the Blue Raiders held the Roadrunners scoreless for the first six innings thanks to pitchers Zach Keenan and Austin Cheeley.
Keenan started the game and pitched the first 4.1 innings, striking out two and walking two.
Cheeley entered in relief with two Roadrunners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth. The junior punched out back-to-back batters to hold the MT lead at 2-0 moving into the sixth.
However, the UTSA bats fired when they needed to in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game 2-2.
The Roadrunners pushed across the winning run in the eighth on a bunt to the pitcher, walking it off 3-2.
The series finale between the Blue Raiders and Roadrunners will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. After closing out the series in San Antonio MT will stay on the road, this time traveling to Bowling Green, Ky. for a meeting with rival WKU starting on Friday, April 16 at 5 p.m.
