The Blue Raiders Tie With Rice in The Series Finale

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In a hard-fought game on both sides of the field, the Middle Tennessee baseball team tied with Rice, 9-9, in the series finale on Saturday. This was the seventh extra inning game the Blue Raiders (15-11-1, C-USA 4-3-1) have played in this season and the first tie for the MT since April 15, 2018, strangely enough also against Rice (13-14-1, C-USA 2-5-1).
"I'm disappointed that we didn't win the game, I thought a couple of times we had it won," said Head Coach Jim Toman. "I proud of the guys, we fought back twice to tie [the game] when we were behind in the last inning, but we couldn't get the big hit."
The Blue Raiders jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third inning with a walk and a pair of singles. Brett Coker's knock to left field brought JT Mabry in to score and gave MT a 1-0 lead.
Rice quickly erased the Raider lead in the next half inning with a two-run home run and an RBI double.
The MT offense heated up in the fifth inning as the Raiders struck for four runs, on six singles, and one Owl error.
The Blue Raiders combined for a season-high 15 hits in today's 12 inning stalemate. Three of the Raider hits were doubles, all three came in the ninth inning or later.
MT starting pitcher threw four innings, struck out five, and walked just one before handing the game over to freshman pitcher Eriq Swan.
Swan matched Seibert and pitched four innings and struck out five while just allowing one walk.
The Owls fought back and took an 8-7 lead in the top of the ninth on a walk, a pair of singles, and a Blue Raider miscue.
MT answered in the bottom half of the ninth with a pair of doubles from Bryce Symlar and Daniel Freeman to push the game into extra innings.
Senior David Zoz came in to relieve Swan an allowed one unearned run and struck out one in four innings pitched.
The Blue Raiders and Owls mirrored each other in extra frames, neither breaking away from the other, and eventually ended in a tie after 12 innings due to travel circumstances.
"I'm proud of the guys," said Toman. "After we lost the lead we fought back a couple times in extra innings, so we're showing a little grit and determination."
Now that the series with Rice has concluded, the Raiders will begin an eight-game road swing starting with UTSA on Friday April, 9 at 6 p.m. in San Antonio.
"We have a few guys that are on the DL and they'll have some time to heal," said Toman. "We'll practice again on Tuesday and Wednesday, regroup, get some treatment and some rest, do our two COVID test, and then we'll get on a flight and head to UTSA."
