MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Soccer had to wait a little longer for their season-opening match, but it proved to be a worthwhile one as the Blue Raiders (1-0) earned a 1-0 shutout victory against the Belmont Bruins (0-1) on Friday night at Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium.
"It was exciting to get back on the field and finally play a game in front of our home crowd tonight," expressed head coach Aston Rhoden. "Just having that opportunity was really special for everyone, especially our fans. Looking forward, it's always good to start the season on a positive note. Having a clean sheet and earning the win is always a great way to start the season, especially in front of your own fans."
The Blue Raiders jumped out early to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as junior Cambell Kivisto controlled a ball into the right side of the 18-yard box and powered in a shot off her right foot for team's first of the season and Kivisto's second of her career.
"Taking an early advantage was really great for us," said Rhoden. "When you are at home and you get a lead, it's a lot easier to protect it than when you are on the road. It really settles everyone done and helps us know that it's about trying to get another goal and extend our lead or just manage the game."
Middle Tennessee had a strong showing, outshooting the Bruins 15-8, committing six on target. The Blue Raiders also doubled-up the Bruins on corners, 6-3.
Junior Hannah Suder earned the shutout, where she played all 90 minutes in goal, and securing three saves on the night.
