MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Soccer (3-3-1) came up slightly short on comeback bid, falling 2-1 against the ETSU Buccaneers (3-1-0) on Friday evening inside Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Raiders outshot ETSU 20-9, including a 10-4 mark with on-target shots. Middle Tennessee also held a 4-1 advantage in corners in the contest.
Senior Peyton DePriest committed seven shots in the contest, putting a match-high four on target, as well as netting the Blue Raiders sole goal of the contest.
In net, junior Hannah Suder played all 90 minutes for the Blue Raiders, tallying two saves in the contest.
The Buccaneers and Blue Raiders battled back-and-forth through the early parts of the game, with ETSU taking two early shots before Middle Tennessee would control the next 20 minutes outshooting the Bucs 5-1. Sophomore Taylor Hamlett had an amazing look that nearly counted in the 26th minute but ETSU's keeper Shu Ohba was able to prevent the opportunity to keep the game scoreless halfway through the opening frame.
The stalemate was broken, however, in the 43rd minute off a pass from the left side of the 18-yard box from the Bucs' Jenna Brown that found the head of Kyra Ranvek to put the Bucs on top 1-0 heading into halftime.
Middle Tennessee opened the second half with six shots, but to no success before the Buccaneers' Kyra Ranvek notched her second goal of the night off a ball from Momoko Horiuchi to take the 2-0 advantage in the 65th minute.
The Blue Raiders remained aggressive looking to try and even things up. Middle Tennessee got a spark in the 79th minute as DePriest drew a Buccaneer foul in the penalty box to earn a penalty kick attempt that she connected on with ease to bring the Blue Raiders back within one, 2-1.
The Blue Raiders had a pair of opportunities over the final 10 minutes of play, but nothing would connect as the horn eventually sounded to close out the 2-1 contest.
