Choudrant, La. – Middle Tennessee finished the first round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in 17th place at Squire Creek Country Club, led by redshirt sophomore Gavin Clements and sophomore Owen Stamper, who ended play tied for 17th at 71 (-1).
One of the last four teams to tee off Sunday, the Blue Raiders rose to as high as sixth in the 21-team field, five strokes off the lead. By the end of play, Middle Tennessee had fallen to 17th, winding up at 297 (+9).
The Blue Raiders head into the second round 15 strokes behind leader Houston at 284 (-4).
After recording one of just seven eagles on the day, Stamper finished his round with an exclamation point, recording a birdie on the ninth hole to finish the day below par. Clements rebounded from a pair of bogeys in his first seven holes to birdie four of the next seven.
Nick Wolf finished the day tied for 69th at 75 (+3). Kevin Jegers came in at 80 (+8), tied for 103rd. Palmer Sadlowski carded an 81 (+9) to end the round in a tie for 109th.
QUOTING COACH MCENTIRE
"I was happy to see the red numbers from Gavin and Owen," head coach Mark McEntire said. Both very solid rounds, and really happy to see them bounce back. Disappointed with having to count an 80. Hard to shoot a good round having to do that. We will rebound tomorrow and move up the board."
