MT tops Southern Miss, 81-71
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Middle Tennessee broke open a close game with a sensational fourth-quarter run to blow past Southern Miss, 81-71, here Saturday afternoon.
Courtney Whitson had a banner day as she supplied a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Kseniya Malashka returned from a two-game absence due to health and safety protocols and supplied 19 points, keyed by a 9-of-11 effort from the free-throw line, and freshman center Anastasiia Boldyreva continued her impressive run with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.
Dor Saar and Alexis Whittington each tallied nine points and four assists as the Lady Raiders (13-4, 5-2) secured the big road win.
The game was competitive throughout with 12 ties and 11 lead changes and it wasn't decided until late in the fourth quarter when Middle Tennessee used a 20-2 run to build a 73-62 lead.
"Really, really proud of this basketball team," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Southern Miss is a tough place to win. They always play us tough and today was no different. We were short-handed again this weekend but this team found a way to gut it out. This is an impressive win for our team. We had so many different players step up today."
One of the biggest was Whitson with her second double-double of the season, but it wasn't as much what Whitson did as when she did it.
The junior forward took the game over in the fourth quarter. Whitson scored 15 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, including two 3-pointers and a 5-of-5 showing at the free-throw line to ice the win.
"Courtney Whitson is a bad woman," Insell said. "She took the game over. Courtney Whitson wasn't going to allow this team to lose today. Courtney was saying it in every huddle and at halftime, 'we are not going to lose.' She said it, but her actions also backed it up."
Middle Tennessee was at its best with the game hanging in the balance. The Lady Raiders shot 57 percent (8-of-14) from the field in the fourth quarter, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. They were 8-of-9 from the charity stripe in the final stanza.
Middle Tennessee will return to Murphy Center to begin a three-game homestand against Marshall Thursday. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
