Malashka, Boldyreva receive league awards
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's Kseniya Malashka and Anastasiia Boldyreva swept this week's Conference USA Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively, the league office announced Monday.
Both players were instrumental in helping lead the Lady Raiders (15-4) to a sweep of Marshall and rival WKU last weekend, enabling Middle Tennessee to move to within one game of the C-USA East Division lead.
"Both of those young ladies are deserving of this recognition," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell. "They continue to improve and play a key role in the success of our program. It's not just the numbers they put up but it's the impact they are making in the framework of the game."
Malashka joins WKU's Meral Abdelgawad and Charlotte's Octavia Jett-Wilson as the only players to win multiple C-USA Player of the Week awards this season after being so honored for the second time this season. It is the first freshman of the week award for Bolyreva.
Malashka continued her recent dominance in leading Middle Tennessee past East Division contenders Marshall and WKU. The junior forward scored 43 points in 35 total minutes of action against the two foes.
Malashka averaged 21.5 points, five rebounds and two steals in the two games, while shooting a sizzling 64 percent (14-of-22) from the field, including 4-of-7 (57 percent) from 3-point range. She was also 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Malashka scored a game-high 21 points in the win against WKU but it was more when she did her damage in helping the Lady Raiders secure victory. Malashka scored 18 of her 21 points in the final 11 minutes, shooting 4-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-2 on a pair of back-breaking fourth-quarter 3-pointers, and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.
The talented forward was just as dominant against Marshall, pouring in a game-high 22 points and grabbing seven rebounds. She was 9-of-15 from the field against Marshall, to go with seven rebounds.
Malashka is averaging 19.4 points and shooting 60 percent from the field (35-of-58) over her last five games.
Boldyreva continued her progression as one of the top freshmen in C-USA with another strong weekend. The 6-foot-6 center averaged 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots against Marshall and WKU.
The Russian International enjoyed an exceptional game against Marshall with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with five rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot. It marked the third consecutive game Boldyreva established a new career high for points.
She totaled six points and four rebounds in the win against WKU.
Boldyreva is averaging 11 points over the last five game, which is double her 5.6 scoring average for the season.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays host to West Division leader UAB Saturday. Tipoff is 5 p.m.
