MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders won games on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend at Blue Raider Softball Field. In Saturday's 2 p.m. first pitch against Trevecca Nazarene University, MTSU had to rally late to secure the win. But playing at the same time one day later against Jackson State Community College, the bats exploded, and the Raiders coasted to a 37-1 win.
Breeden's Briefing
"The Saturday game against Trevecca, I thought we played really well," said Head Coach Jeff Breeden. "We executed our offense well. We scored by some squeezes and got our bunts down. On Sunday against Jackson State, we hit the ball well. Our pitchers threw well. We played good defense all the way around. That game got out of hand at the end. Everyone had a good day at the plate. I am pleased with where we are after the weekend."
Saturday, Oct. 1 vs. Trevecca
With the scored tied at 4-4 in the eighth inning, Laura Mealer broke the stalemate for MTSU with a one-out sacrifice fly to deep center, before Paige Connors gave the Raiders an insurance RBI in the ninth on a bases-loaded, two-out single. A run on a wild pitch an at-bat later would make it 7-4.
Ansley Blevins put a bow-tie on the afternoon with a solo homer in the 10th to make it 8-4.
After Trevecca struck first in the opening frame, Mealer's squeeze bunt in the bottom of the first would score Shelby Echols to tie the game early.
Shelby Sargant would give the Raiders a lead in the third on a bloop RBI single with two outs.
Ava Tepe would log the second RBI squeeze Saturday an inning later, before Amaya Harris would follow suit an at-bat later to make it 4-1.
Trevecca would cut the Middle Tennessee lead to 4-2 with a solo homer in the sixth, and tied the contest with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Gretchen Mead allowed a first inning run but nothing more, tossing the first three innings from the circle. Kamryn Carcich pitched the ensuring trio of frames, surrendering the sixth inning run. Keri Munn entered to pitch in the seventh and although presiding over Trevecca's tying runs, she would hold the MTSU lead with scoreless eighth, ninth and 10th innings.
Sunday, Oct. 2 vs. Jackson State
There would be no suspense in Sunday's 37-1 thrashing of Jackson State. In the first inning, Shelby Echols led off with a single. Mealer and Blevins were both hit by a pitches to load the bases. Amaya Harris hit a shot to center-right field to drive in three runs.
Blevins started the third inning off with a double. Harris then secured an RBI single with Blevins scoring the run. Harris scored off a bunt from Ava Tepe, and MTSU ended the third inning with five runs scored.
Jackson State scored its only run in the top of the fourth.
The Blue Raiders opened the floodgates in the fifth, with Shelby Sargent leading off the inning with a single. A double from Julia Garcia sent Sargent from second to home to commence the inning's onslaught from MTSU. The Blue Raiders ended the inning with eight hits and fifteen runs, and would cruise from then on.
