Blue Raiders Take a Point off Rival WKU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders were able to overcome a halftime deficit against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Sunday evening at the Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium. Both teams played aggressively late in Sunday evening's match, but the Conference USA rivals exited the match with a 1-1 draw.
A 12-minute stretch across the end of the first half and the start of the second saw both goals scored. The Hilltoppers struck first late in the opening 45 minutes, when Kayla Meyer found the back of the net on a deflection in the 36th minute. But the Blue Raiders equalized promptly after halftime, with forward Emma Pettersen scoring in the 47th.
Both sides will gain one point from the game. This is the Blue Raiders' first point in conference play, snapping a four-match string of defeats dating back to non-conference action.
The Blue Raiders eschewed their traditional blue and white kits, instead proudly wearing pink uniforms to raise awareness for breast cancer.
By the Numbers
2: The freshman Pettersen has now scored two goals this season. After tallying her first on Sept. 18 at UAB, the Kristiansand, Norway native logged an equalizer early after the break on Sunday evening. The forward has played in each match this season and started in nine of them, while now having logged each of MTSU's two most recent goals.
7: For the second consecutive game, Hannah Suder notched seven saves. The mark remains a season-high for the senior goalkeeper from Jacksonville, Fla. Suder recorded six of her saves in the second half as the Blue Raiders held on for the draw in the waning minutes.
Rhoden's Roundup
"Certainly it was a typical Western Kentucky-Middle Tennessee game in terms of the intensity," said Middle Tennessee head coach Aston Rhoden. "I thought we didn't play as well in terms of our game in the first half. We came back in the second half and created a lot of good chances and should have just put those away."
