Blue Raiders Strike Late to Draw Shorthanded Charlotte
10/6/2022 8:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders were down a goal with 17 minutes to play at the Charlotte 49ers on Thursday evening.
But at that precise moment, the Raiders would go up a player due to a red card assessed to Charlotte, and they promptly made the Niners pay for having to play shorthanded late in the match that finished in a 1-1 draw at Transamerica Field.
Kirstine Lykke came off the bench in the 66th minute to score on a set piece in the 73rd, with assists from Delaney Thomas and Sascha Nielsen. Middle Tennessee earns a point for its second consecutive match, after a split decision at home against Conference USA rivals Western Kentucky last Sunday.
The goal was Lykke's third in 2022. It's also the second time the Haderslev, Denmark native has tied a match with under 20 minutes to play, after scoring in the 72nd minute in a 1-1 draw at Belmont on Aug. 28.
The Blue Raiders conceded in the 26th minute despite maintaining consistent possession for much of the first half. However, MTSU would recapture the momentum they enjoyed in the game's early stages by outshooting the home side 12-9 overall and recording four shots on goal.
By the Numbers
12: The Raiders collected 12 shots against Charlotte, representing a team-high in conference play. It's also the Middle Tennessee's highest overall clip since Sept. 8 against Tennessee Tech.
5: Five of those total shots came off the foot of junior midfielder Eleanor Gough, which represents a career high for the Milton Keynes, England native. Emma Pettersen and Megan Carroll also added a pair of shots each, while Caroline Manley and Yana Yordanova both added one. Both of Pettersen's shots were on target and one of Gough's was as well.
7: The 49ers were guilty of seven bookings on Thursday night, including one on the Charlotte bench. But it was a second yellow card awarded to the Niners' Kristy Campbell that was decisive, as the Raiders would swiftly tie the match on the ensuing free kick sequence.
Rhoden's Roundup
"I thought we played well for most of the game tonight," said Middle Tennessee head coach Aston Rhoden. "I'm proud of the effort and spirit we showed during this match. Now we have to get rested and ready for a tough opponent in LA Tech."
