MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders moved to 6-0 this fall with wins over the Columbia State Community College Chargers on Saturday and Snead State Community College on Sunday.
Both matchups took place at 2 p.m. at Blue Raider Softball Field. MTSU has just two more games remaining in its fall slate.
Breeden's Briefing
"I thought we hit the ball well this weekend," said Middle Tennessee head coach Jeff Breeden. "I thought Amaya Harris was good this weekend. Our pitchers [Sunday], especially – we had 84 percent first-pitch strikes, which was good. We played good defense all weekend. We had a couple of home runs today. Mealer got back on track with one. Blevins had another. Blevins has played well. Everybody's playing well. We're not making many errors at all. We're coming into our own here, hitting our stride for the last week of the fall season."
Columbia State at MTSU (Saturday, Oct. 8)
The Blue Raiders scored nine runs in the seventh inning to pull away from the Columbia State Chargers on Saturday, defeating their foes from Maury County 16-1.
Lexi Medlock commenced the offensive onslaught, Claire Czajkowski followed with a bases-loaded RBI single, before Riley Gilmore would bring the runners home with a three-run double.
Ashlee Jacoway and Abby Shoulders would add to the RBI tally before Lexi Medlock's two-run single would make it 14-1 after seven innings.
Amaya Harris and Czajkowski would pad the Middle Tennessee lead with late game RBIs.
The Chargers would strike first with a run in the opening frame, but starting pitcher Paige Connors would limit the damage in the inning by stranding baserunners on the corners. Shelby Echols and Ansley Blevins would spearhead an answer in the bottom half, with an RBI sacrifice fly and single.
Savannah Behabetz would kickstart a two-run second inning for the Raiders, to go ahead 4-1. Julia Garcia then made it 5-1 with a double an inning later.
Connors would allow just the opening run in her four-inning outing. Claire Woods would enter in the fifth and toss a trio shutout frames, highlighted by a sixth-inning jam escaped with a pair of runners in scoring position. Keri Munn pitched a scoreless eighth, Kamryn Carcich would toss the ninth and Gretchen Mead finished the game from the circle.
Snead State at MTSU (Sunday, Oct. 9)
The Blue Raiders closed the weekend with a 12-1 victory over Snead State Community College on Sunday. Laura Mealer and Ansley Blevins each homered as the pitching staff did not issue a walk.
MTSU led 3-0 with a run having already scored in the inning when Mealer stepped to the plate in the fourth. The sophomore shortstop turned on the first pitch she saw and sent it over the left field wall to double the Blue Raider advantage.
Middle Tennessee kept padding its lead, highlighted by Blevins' two-run shot to left field in the four-run eighth inning.
