Shooting woes hinder Blue Raiders in 74-68 loss
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Middle Tennessee cut what had been a 19-point deficit to four in the final minute, but Winthrop held on for a 76-68 win in its homecoming game Saturday. Camryn Weston scored 11 of his team-leading 14 points in the second half to lead the comeback attempt.
The Blue Raiders outscored the Eagles 27-19 over the final 10 and a half minutes, but it was not enough to overcome their slow start. MTSU was 15-for-29 from the free throw line, including a six-of-15 performance in the first half. In hostile territory, the Blue Raiders shot 1-for-17 from 3-point range after halftime, but 15 second-half offensive rebounds helped the visitors keep the pressure on.
Weston and DeAndre Dishman led the Blue Raiders with 14 points apiece. Dishman added 10 rebounds for his second double-double as a Blue Raider and the fourth of his career.
By The Numbers
9 – The Blue Raiders blocked nine shots, tying the fourth-most in program history.
61 – Teafale Lenard, Jr. moved into sole possession of ninth place in career blocks at MTSU after rejecting a pair of Eagle attempts. He is one away from tying Perrin Buford for eighth.
8 – Middle Tennessee won the battle on the boards by eight, outrebounding Winthrop 42-34.
Blue Raider Notes
"We were playing hard. We were just a little bit of sorts offensively. I thought we were getting out of our offensive flow to get the ball downhill, get to the basket. I just thought their defensive pressure, the crowd, the energy in the building, those kind of things played negatively for our guys to start the game. Once we settled down, I thought we started doing some nice things."
