MT takes down East-leading Charlotte, 46-45
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Middle Tennessee freshman Anastasiia Boldyreva has been coming of age during the last month.
The 6-foot-6 center had a coming out party Sunday as she led Middle Tennessee to an exhilarating 46-45 win against Conference USA East Division leader Charlotte Sunday afternoon.
Boldyreva poured in a career-high 22 points, pulled six rebounds, and blocked three shots. She connected on 10-of-15 field goals, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, in her most dominant performance as a Lady Raider.
Middle Tennessee (17-5, 9-3) pulled to within one-half game of Charlotte (13-8, 9-2) for the East Division lead.
"What a great, great game between two really good teams," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Charlotte is a well-coached team that has been finding ways to win close games so to come out of here with a win is big for us. I'm proud of our team for the way they bounced back after a tough loss (at Old Dominion), and what can you say about (Boldyreva)?
"She has been improving every single day in practices and you can see it on the court. Fans see it in the games, but we have seen it every day in practice. She was big-time today."
Boldyreva scored 15 of her 22 in the second half. After starting the game 3-of-6 from the field, Boldyreva was 7-of-9 the rest of the way.
Boldyreva's third-quarter dominance turned the tide for Middle Tennessee. The dominant center outscored Charlotte 11-6 in the quarter as the Lady Raiders grabbed a 38-29 lead. Boldyreva poured in 5-of-7 shots, including a 3-pointer.
Middle Tennessee went on a 13-2 run to close the third quarter and led 38-29 entering the fourth frame. Boldyreva scored all 11 of her third-quarter points during the run, but the game was far from over.
The game featured two teams that had been on the opposite ends of the spectrum in close contests. Charlotte had won six consecutive games that were decided by three points or less, while Middle Tennessee's five losses were by a combined 10 points.
Charlotte battled back and took a 45-42 lead on KeKe McKinney's 3-pointer with 2:18 remaining, but Boldyreva pulled the Lady Raiders to within 45-44 with 1:09 remaining. Following a stop on the defensive end, Boldyreva came back with 5-footer to put Middle Tennessee back in front 46-45 with 1:09 remaining.
Mikayla Boykin's potential game-winning jumper with two seconds remaining was off of the mark.
Defense was again a stable for Middle Tennessee as it held an opponent below 50 points for the seventh time this season. Alexis Whittington's defense against Octavia Jett-Wilson, C-USA's third-leading scorer at 18.6 points per game, was a factor. Jett-Wilson was held to eight points and was 2-of-9 from the field.
Kseniya Malashka added 11 points and three rebounds. Courtney Whitson supplied seven points and 10 rebounds.
