MT Splits on Opening Day
2/18/2022 11:05:00 PM | Baseball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sometimes all it takes is one swing of the bat. That's what Fausto Lopez proved in game one and once again in game two of Middle Tennessee baseball's opening day doubleheader split Friday.
The Blue Raiders (1-1) managed to rally from behind with big innings in both weather delayed games. The surge in game one was enough to secure the victory vs. the Red Storm but was countered by a three-run bottom of the ninth inning vs. the Seahawks.
Trailing by 0-2 in the seventh inning vs. St. John's (0-1) and 2-3 in the sixth inning vs. UNC Wilmington (1-0), Lopez delivered home runs in both opportunities.
GAME 1: Middle Tennessee 3, St. John's 2
MT managed just one hit in the first 5 2/3 innings. Wyatt Morgan's second walk of the day in the top of the seventh led to Lopez's two-out home run.
Both teams retired the side in order over the final two innings to force the game to extras. Lopez came up big once again with a leadoff double and later scored what would be the game's winning run on a Luke Vinson RBI.
After Wigginton allowed two runs to score in the first (one unearned), the senior left-handed pitcher was dominant for the rest of his seven inning outing. Wigginton, a native of Franklin, Tenn., struck out seven and did not allow a walk.
Jaden Hamm and Eriq Swan were nearly perfect in a combined three innings of relief. Hamm struck out two while Swan secured the save by spearing a blazing comeback line drive.
Lopez finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Briggs Rutter added two hits and scored a run in four at-bats.
GAME 2: Middle Tennessee 4, UNC Wilmington 6
The Blue Raider offense once again struggled to find a spark early in the game.
Trailing 0-2, Brett Coker's single to left in the top of the fourth got the Blue Raiders on the hit column.
UNCW added to its lead in the fifth with a solo shot to make it a three-run game, but a four-run, four-hit top of the sixth for the Blue Raiders, capped off by Lopez's two-run blast, put MT in front.
The Seahawks, however, had one last rally in them in the bottom of the ninth as a walk-off two-run home run dropped the Blue Raiders to .500.
Zach Keenan allowed just two earned runs over six innings while striking out three. Trent Seibert struck out four in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
JT Mabry, Vinson and Lopez each had two-hit games with Lopez adding two RBI and Vinson driving in a run and hitting a triple.
