Blue Raiders Fall to St. John's on Day Two in Wilmington
2/19/2022 3:12:00 PM | Baseball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – All three of Middle Tennessee baseball's games so far in the opening weekend of the 2022 season have been decided by less than two runs. Saturday's 5-6 loss to St. John's (1-1) was another close battle for the Blue Raiders (1-2).
Despite solid performances from JT Mabry at the plate and Jaden Hamm on the mound, the Blue Raiders couldn't overcome the Red Storm after the third inning.
Mabry finished the afternoon with three hits in five at-bats, including a double and two runs.
Hamm had a career day in relief, posting career highs in innings pitched (4 1/3) and strikeouts (7).
Mabry pushed across the game's first run on a single down the left field line and a two-base error in the first. Fausto Lopez followed close after with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Blue Raiders.
The third inning saw MT score three runs on two hits and two errors. Mabry doubled in between two Red Storm errors while Brett Coker singled and Briggs Rutter hit a sacrifice fly to put the Blue Raiders ahead 5-0.
St. John's stormed its way back into the game in the top of the fourth with four unanswered runs which cut the Middle Tennessee lead to one. Pitching in relief in his first collegiate game, James Sells came through with a huge strikeout to prevent any further damage.
St. John's continued its surge in the fifth with two RBI singles to take a 6-5 lead.
Jaden Hamm and St. John's reliever Dylan Johnson squared off on the Brooks Field mound for the next four innings. The two combined for no runs, one walk, nine strikeouts and eight hits allowed.
Looking for one last chance to score, the Blue Raiders were sent down in order to end the game.
Rutter and Brycen Thomas each had two-hit days. Rutter is now 4-for-8 at the plate on the season.
