MT Finishes Runner up in Men’s and Women’s C-USA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee women's and men's track and field teams both finished as runners up at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The all-around team effort over the two-day weekend saw a handful of records broken and 17 trips to the podium for individual performances.
The women racked up 91 points over the weekend and were neck and neck with Southern Miss till the end of the meet. Southern Miss's shot put and 4x400 performances sling-shotted them to 101, earning them back-to-back indoor championships.
The Middle Tennessee men's track and field team racked up a total of 94 points over the weekend, but Charlotte was too far ahead with 155.5 points due to their stellar long-distance team that was right behind the Blue Raiders during the cross-country season.
Women's Track and Field Team
Eusila Chepkemei had an out-of-this-world weekend in Alabama. Chepkemei became the first female in Conference USA history to sweep the 800-meter, mile, and 3000-meter. Chepkemei's three first-place finishes on day two included a program record-breaking performance in the 3000-meter that helped her secure the High Point Scorer of the Meet award and First Team All-Conference USA honors. Chepkemei accounted for 40 of the women's 91 points this weekend.
Lyn'Nikka Vance was named First Team All-Conference USA for her efforts in the 60-meter dash and the long jump. Vance matched her personal best from yesterday's prelims to take first in the finals with a time of 7.42 seconds. In the long jump, she finished in third with a length of 5.93m.
Glory Nyenke was among the four named First Team All-Conference USA for the C-USA record-breaking first-place finish in the distance medley relay. Nyenke placed third in the women's 200 meter and 400 meter with times of 24.42 seconds and 53.84 seconds respectively. Both finishes were personal bests for Nyenke.
Esther Isa took first place in the women's triple jump with a personal best length of 13.48, earning Isa First Team All-Conference USA honors. Isa also took second in the women's high jump with a final height of 1.78m, .01 meters from her personal best.
Finally, Caitlin Cunningham and Joice Jebor both earned First Team All-Conference USA honors with their C-USA record-breaking performance along with Chepkemei and Nyenke in the DMR.
Men's Track and Field Team
Alaba Akintola took home Freshman of the Meet, High Point Scorer of the Meet, and First Team All-Conference USA on the men's side. Akintola was nothing short of electric this weekend, erasing a 17-year-old record in the men's 200 meter with a time of 20.72 seconds. Akintola also clocked 6.72 seconds on his way to a first-place finish in the men's 60 meter. Overall, Akintola accounted for 20 points for the Blue Raiders.
Benjamin Onyekwelu earned First Team All-Conference USA for taking first in the men's long jump with a length of 7.69 meters. Onyekwelu also finished in fourth place during the men's triple jump hitting a personal-best mark of 15.36 meters.
Brian Rono earned First Team All-Conference USA honors for his first-place finish in the DMR to go along with his third-place finish in the men's 800-meter dash. Rono finished the 800 meter with a time of 1:54.92.
Omamuyovwi Erhire set a new program record on Saturday earning him Second Team All-Conference USA honors. On day two, Erhire earned his second silver medal of the weekend hitting 15.65 meters in the men's triple jump.
Carmelo Cannizzaro, Darian Jones, and Habtamu Geta earned First Team All-Conference USA honors for their first-place finish in the men's DMR on Saturday.
