EUGENE, Ore. – Mustapha Bokpin's stellar sophomore season continued Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Ore. He ran big times in both the 100M and 200M to advance to the finals Friday for the chance for a national championship title.
The Blue Raider's first event of the evening was the 100M, a race that he won in the Conference USA Outdoor Championships a month ago. In the second heat, he found a kick in the final 50 meters of the competition, crossing the finish line second of the eight runners at 10.09 seconds to automatically qualify for the finals. The mark was the same time that pushed him to the quarterfinals in the First Rounds last week.
A little more than an hour later, the Ghana native put up a blistering 20.19 time in the 200-meter event, leading his heat from the get-go. His second-quickest time of the season saw him finish almost a full tenth of a second quicker than the second place runner in the first heat.
Bokpin is the first male Blue Raider since Kigen Chemadi in 2019 to advance to the national finals in two events with his qualifications in the 100 and 200. Chemadi ran in the finals in the 3000M Steeplechase and the 5000M during the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
He will take the track for the final time in his sophomore season Friday, running in the 100M at 7:52 p.m. CT and the 200M at 8:37 p.m. CT from Hayward Field.
