WKU claims 97-93 OT win
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The rivalry between Middle Tennessee and WKU turned into an offensive bonanza, but the Lady Raiders' best offensive performance of the season was not enough in a 97-93 overtime loss here Saturday afternoon.
Middle Tennessee (20-6, 12-4) shot a sizzling 53 percent (16-of-30) from 3-point range and posted season highs for points and 3-pointers in the gut-wrenching loss. The Lady Raiders led by 16, 66-50 with 8:19 remaining and owned an 83-71 advantage with 2:27 remaining; however, they weren't able to protect the lead down the stretch.
WKU (18-9, 11-5) hit 10 consecutive field goals and used a 10-0 run over the final 2:10 of regulation to force overtime, and it never trailed in the extra period.
"I think you just have to give WKU a great deal of credit today," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We were in good shape on the road against a good team, but they showed great resiliency. They came back and found a way to win. I tip my cap to those young ladies and the effort they showed in their comeback. It's a tough loss for us, but we didn't do the things we needed to do down the stretch to win."
The loss overshadowed some exceptional individual performances from the Lady Raiders, who had four players in double figures, including three with 20-plus. Jalynn Gregory poured in 30 points on the strength of 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, dished out four assists and had two steals. The 30 points and six treys were career highs.
Courtney Whitson provided a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while connecting on 4-of-5 3-pointers. Dor Saar added 20 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Anastasiia Boldyreva rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and seven rebounds.
WKU was led by Player of the Year candidate Meral Abelgawad, who poured in 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a dominant performance that included a 9-of-10 shooting effort from the field. Jaylin Foster also added 27 points.
The Lady Raiders return home to face Charlotte Wednesday. Tipoff at Murphy Center is 6 p.m.
