3/13/2022 9:53:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders (6-10) earned the series win over Auburn (13-4) after taking the second game 4-3 in extra innings. MT nearly came back from a 10-0 deficit in the first game of the day, but fell short in a 7-10 loss.
Mason Speirs finished the day 5-for-9 with one home run, three RBI and a double.
Speirs is now batting .394 with a .667 slugging percentage, .474 on-base percentage, two home runs and nine RBI on the season. He entered 2022 with 15 career hits in two seasons and 37 games played. Through 12 games played this season, Speirs has 13 hits.
Game Two: Middle Tennessee 4, Auburn 3
After Auburn took an early 3-0 lead, the Blue Raider offense flipped a switch in the fourth.
Mason Speirs continued his weekend surge by sparking MT's comeback with an RBI double to right-center. Three batters later, Tatsunori Negishi sent home Speirs and one more run on a clutch RBI single to the left-center gap.
Peyton Wigginton (2-2) came out of the bullpen with the Blue Raiders in front and pitched perhaps his best outing of the season thus far with 4.1 shutout innings, three strikeouts and three hits allowed to hold off any chances of an Auburn comeback.
Wigginton faced trouble in the bottom of the sixth as an Auburn double put a runner in scoring position and a Tiger single filled first base. But a heads-up play by Wigginton halted the rally. Wigginton came set as the second base runner took off early. The left-hander alertly stepped off the rubber and threw out the runner for the inning's third out.
Wigginton retired six of the next seven batters to send MT home with a series win and doubleheader split.
Speirs and Fausto Lopez each doubled and recorded two-hit games.
Nathan Sanders did not have an official at-bat as the senior outfielder had four walks in four at-bats. Sanders increased his on-base percentage to .465.
Negishi drove in a team-high two runs on his RBI double. JT Mabry extended his hitting streak to five with a single and run scored.
Game One: Middle Tennessee 7, Auburn 10
With their backs against the wall down 0-10 in the in the fourth inning, Speirs started his three-hit game with a two-run home run to center field.
MT continued to chip away in the sixth as Sanders blasted his second home run of the weekend and third of the season to bring in two more runs.
Coming in as a pinch hitter later in the sixth, Jacob Williams delivered with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 5-10.
MT inched closer in the seventh with the help of Sanders' RBI single and Jackson Galloway sent his first Blue Raider home run over the left field green wall at Plainsman Park but the Blue Raiders rally came up short.
Jalen Wirtz and Dustin Sprong combined to pitch 5.1 scoreless, one-hit innings. The reliever duo combined for five strikeouts and one walk.
