Slow start sees Blue Raiders slip to 12th at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – Middle Tennessee recovered from a rocky start in the second round of the Schenkel Invitational on Saturday, but the Blue Raiders fell two spots to 12th place heading into the third and final round. MT combined for 11 scores over par on holes 10-14 – its first five holes of the round – before going 1-under on the front nine.
"We got off to a rough start and just could not dig out of the hole," head coach Mark McEntire said. "I'm proud of the way Nick and Owen battled back and gave a solid round. We need to get everyone clicking and move up the board tomorrow.
Michael Barnard recorded the Blue Raiders' best score of the day, carding a 70 (-2). After going 2-over through his first five holes of the day, the Hendersonville, Tenn., native went 4-under the rest of the way, including birdies on his final three holes of the day.
Barnard currently sits in a tie for 40th at 146 (+2) through two rounds.
Owen Stamper leads MT at 143 (-1), heading into the third round in a tie for 21st. The Scottsville, Ky., rebounded from a 4-over performance through his first three holes of the day, going 3-under over his final 15 to finish with a 73 (+1).
Nick Wolf is tied for 34th at 145 (+1) through two rounds after a 75 (+3) performance Saturday. He finished the second round strong, birdieing two of his final three holes.
After birdies on two of three holes to get back to even par by the sixth hole, Kevin Jegers stumbled on his final three holes to finish at 75 (+3). Jegers ended the day in a tie for 47th at 147 (+3).
Connor Daly rounded out the Blue Raider lineup with a 76 (+4) on Saturday to end the round tied for 74th at 153 (+9).
In a field featuring four top-50 teams in the Golfstat rankings, Middle Tennessee finished the day six strokes ahead of No. 47 Florida Gulf Coast and 25 strokes behind host Georgia Southern.
The third and final round begins with tee times between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. CT Sunday.
