HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Blue Raiders (15-16, 2-2 C-USA) fell 4-1 in their C-USA road opener against the Marshall Thundering Herd (17-9, 1-3 C-USA) on Friday at Dot Hicks Field.
Freshman Laura Mealer got the Blue Raiders as she connected on her sixth double with two away in the first. However, the Blue Raiders couldn't capitalize as a lineout closed the inning and Mealer was left stranded in the first.
The Thundering Herd jumped out to an early lead after Marshall's Harrell connected on a solo home run over the center-field wall to give the Thundering Herd the 1-0 lead.
Marshall opened the third with back-to-back singles to put two on with no one out. The Thundering Herd added another one, extending their lead to two, off a sacrifice fly for Marshall's first out of the inning. Marshall's Stevenson then connected on a one-out two-RBI home run over the left-field wall to put the Thundering Herd up by four after three.
Mealer remained perfect in her second at-bat as she knocked a one-out single into left field in the fourth to try and open up a Blue Raider rally, but Middle Tennessee once again couldn't connect on another hit as she was left stranded in the fourth.
The Blue Raiders looked to get things started in the sixth. Following a strikeout and a groundout, junior Kelci Hill and Mealer drew back-to-back walks to put two on and get the Blue Raiders second runner of the day in scoring position with two down. Freshman Anyce Harvey followed Mealer, connecting on a blooper up the middle into shallow center and plating Hill from second to get the Blue Raiders on the board, 4-1.
Sargent drew one more walk off Marshall's Nester in the seventh, however, that was as close as the Blue Raiders would get as the Thundering Herd took the 4-1 win.
Freshmen Mealer and Harvey led the Blue Raiders in the contest. Mealer batted a perfect 2-for-2 on the day and recording her sixth double of the season. Harvey went 1-for-3 and knocked in the Blue Raiders sole RBI of the day to push her season total to 23. Hill scored the Blue Raiders' one run in the contest.
Senior Gretchen Mead opened up on the mound for the Blue Raiders, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits and striking out one. Fellow senior Kailey Ahlstrom came in relief of Mead, leading the team two strikeouts and allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings of work.
