Blue Raiders Mash Four Home Runs, But Fall to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee baseball dropped its series finale with UAB 5-6 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon.
Despite hitting four home runs and leading 4-0 before the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Raiders (10-13, 3-3 C-USA) couldn't hold off the Blazers (15-7, 3-3 C-USA).
Mason Speirs got MT off to a quick start in the first. On the first pitch,Speirs, batting third in the lineup, mashed a two-run home run to left to give MT an early 2-0 lead.
Jacob Williams followed in the second with a moonshot home run down the left field line that managed to stay fair, stretching the Blue Raider lead to 3-0.
Briggs Rutter's first long ball of the season came on a no-doubt blast on a 3-0 count in the top of the fifth.
UAB rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
Speirs came up big at the plate once again in the eighth, tying the game at five on a solo home run to left.
Tied at five after nine, Speirs singled to start extra innings and JT Mabry reached on a UAB error but MT couldn't get any runs across. The game ended in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off Blazer home run.
Peyton Wigginton did not factor in the decision as the left-handed pitcher threw 4.1 innings and struck out four batters. Jaden Hamm threw the final 4.2 innings and picked up two strikeouts.
Speirs was the first Blue Raider to hit multiple home runs in a game this season as he drove in three runs and scored two. Fausto Lopez finished the day 3-for-5 with a double. Rutter's home run was his first of the season and Williams hit his second.
