Sells Shines as Blue Raiders Blast Past Golden Eagles

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – James Sells made an impression in his first collegiate start in Middle Tennessee baseball's 8-4 win over Tennessee Tech Tuesday night.
After five previous outings as a reliever and allowing just one run over his last eight innings entering Tuesday, Sells got the nod and came through by pitching a gem against a strong Tennessee Tech offense.
A freshman from Winchester, Tenn., Sells was nearly untouchable retiring the first 17 batters faced, fanning eight and allowing just a bloop single over 6.1 innings pitched.
Sells received plenty of run support early on by the Blue Raider bats. Mason Speirs and Fausto Lopez each homered for the fifth time this season to stay tied for the team lead.
Speirs came first when he crushed an opposite-field, two-run bomb to score the first runs of the game in the top of the first. The senior catcher hit his third home run in his last two games and homered in the first inning for the second straight game.
Lopez followed the next inning with a three-run shot to extend MT's lead to 5-0.
Two more runs came across in the third as Tatsunori Negishi's RBI single and a throwing error made it 7-0. MT scored its eighth run of the game in the eighth inning after Brian Dillingham, who tied a career high with three hits, shot an RBI single up the middle.
Tennessee Tech scored four runs in the final two innings, but the Blue Raiders held on for the midweek win.
The Blue Raiders have won four of their last five games and six of their last nine.
