DALLAS – For the second time this season, Senior Francisco Rocha was tabbed the March 30 Conference USA Athlete of the Week after clinching the win over No. 42 Texas Tech in front of a full-crowd in our first outdoor home match of the season.
With today's announcement, No. 23 Middle Tennessee has earned eight out of 11 C-USA Athlete of the Week awards given in the 2022 Spring season and is the only school in the conference to have two multi-week winners.
The Blue Raiders are coming off a huge 4-3 win over No. 42 Texas Tech to move to 21-3 on the season. With the win, MT has won 15-straight matches and tied the third best record in program history set by the legendary Dick LaLance in 1979. The Raiders need three-consecutive wins to break the longest win streak (17) and four more wins for the most wins in a season/best overall record (24-5) in program history, both can be accomplished in the regular season.
Rocha, a Porto, Portugal native is a five-time C-USA Player of the Week and won the 2021 C-USA Player of the Year after going 23-8 in singles during his junior campaign. Rocha qualified for the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship last year as the highest-ranked C-USA singles player (No. 55) but fell in the first round.
Francisco has continued his tear into this season, boasting a 16-2 singles record and is currently the highest-ranked singles player in the conference (No. 86). However, this year Rocha also has the highest doubles ranking in the conference as well, paired up with Brostrom Poulsen they are 13-6 and sit at No. 66 in the country.
Middle Tennessee will take a weekend off competition before hosting No. 31 Memphis and Alabama A&M at the Adams Tennis Complex on April 8 at 1:00 and 4:30 p.m. CT. Fans are encouraged to stay after the 1 p.m. match with Memphis to honor our two departing graduate students Edge and Holis for all they have given to MTSU and the men's tennis program.
