Middle Tennessee drops senior day contest to LA Tech
5/1/2022 3:46:00 PM | Softball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee (19-31, 6-15 C-USA) was unable to overcome another fast start by Louisiana Tech (35-17, 15-6 C-USA) as the Blue Raiders fell in their final home game of the 2022 season at Blue Raider Softball Field by a score of 6-3 on Sunday
The Lady Techsters got a pair of early runs courtesy of a pair of two out hits. An RBI-single by Brooke Diaz in the first and an RBI triple off the wall in left field by Kylie Neel had LA Tech up 2-0 by the middle of the second inning.
In the third, Louisiana Tech added an unearned run to go up by three, 3-0.
The third inning was also the end of the day for Middle Tennessee starter Corrina Dodd, who allowed two earned in three innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Dodd was relieved by fellow senior Kailey Ahlstrom, who allowed just one baserunner in two innings and had a big strikeout to strand a runner in scoring position and close the fifth.
Gretchen Mead took over for Ahlstrom in the sixth and finished the game out for the Blue Raiders in the circle, giving up three runs over the final two innings of play.
Dodd's counterpart, Lady Techster starter Audrey Pickett, didn't allow a hit until Middle Tennessee right fielder Amaya Harris roped one into centerfield with one out in the fourth. Pickett followed up her complete-game performance from Friday with another complete game, allowing three runs on four hits.
Offensively, Middle Tennessee shortstop Laura Mealer crushed her 10th home run of the season into the parking lot over the fence in left field with nobody on and nobody out in the sixth to make it 5-1.
In the seventh inning, Lani Rodriguez and Hailey Bosley gave themselves memorable last at-bats at the Blue Raider Softball Field. Rodriguez doubled off the wall in left field with one out and Hailey Bosley went the other way to hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 6-3.
Bosley and Mealer led the Blue Raiders in the contest. Bosley went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run, while Mealer went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Rodriguez and Harris also recorded hits in the contest for the Blue Raiders, going 1-for-3 each, while Rodriguez added a run scored.
Louisiana Tech was led by Amanda Gonzalez, who went 1-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. She finished the weekend 8-for-12 with 5 runs scored.
The Blue Raiders honored nine seniors after today's game, seven players and two managers.
Gretchen Mead, Corrina Dodd and Kailey Ahlstrom all had impactful careers in the circle for Middle Tennessee.
Dodd's 79 career appearances are ninth all-time in program history. As a junior, she led the Blue Raiders with 58 strikeouts in a breakout season that placed her second on the team in ERA (2.64), wins (8-4), appearances (22), starts (16), complete games (5), shutouts (2), and innings pitched (103.1). This season, her six wins, 14 starts, five complete games and .218 opponent batting average lead the staff.
Mead waited patiently for her shot at a regular spot in the rotation and made the most of it in 2022. The Kingwood, Texas, native leads the team with 26 appearances, 69 strikeouts, 90.2 innings pitched, and her 13 starts are tied with Claire Woods for second on the squad. Mead finished second on the team in wins (4) and complete games (4).
Ahlstrom's five career saves are tied for the second highest in program history. Last season, she had a team best 2.05 ERA and was also a talented starting pitcher as well, making 35 starts in her career with 274.1 career innings pitched
Second baseman Lani Rodriguez was a four-year starter and is considered to be one of the best defensive middle infielders in program history, with a career .965 fielding percentage. Rodriguez has started in 162 of the 167 games she's played in a Blue Raider uniform and her .971 fielding percentage ranks second on the team this season.
Two-way player Mia Marinakis contributed as a first baseman, pitcher and designated player during her three years with Middle Tennessee. In 21 career appearances on the mound, Marinakis has a 3.20 career ERA. At the plate, the California native has driven in 13 runs and had 26 hits in a largely pinch-hit role.
Savannah Freeman put together a career as one of the biggest speed threats in Blue Raider history with 42 career stolen bases, which is 10th most in program history. Freeman has also contributed 33 runs scored as a pinch-runner.
Catcher Hailey Bosley was a big part in helping the Blue Raider pitching staff have success over the past four seasons, especially in handling classmates Dodd, Mead, Marinakis and Ahlstrom. Bosley boasts a career .963 fielding percentage and has only committed seven errors in her career.
The gentlemen responsible for the beautiful playing surface at Blue Raider Softball Field and making a lot of other things go behind the scenes are managers Hunterland Meeks and Edgar Marceleno. Their work over the past four years for Meeks and three years for Marceleno set a standard that will most certainly be hard to keep up with in the future.
"These seniors have been through a lot of games with us," expressed head coach Jeff Breeden. "Things haven't worked out this year the way we wanted them to, but they have some character about them and they are going to go on and get a degree and be great role models for people out in the community."
