Getting to Know Jestin Porter

The new MT Point Guard is the latest Blue Raider from the Lone Star State
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The stats Jestin Porter put up at Tyler Junior College immediately make your eyes light up.
A 40.0 percent clip from three (42-105) for 17.1 points per game his sophomore year. A 21.4 points per game during his freshman campaign. A volume scorer that's proven his sharp shooting ability at the collegiate level, exactly the type of guard that thrived in MT's system this past year, when Josh Jefferson showed out after transferring in.
It's hard not to get excited about the future for Jestin Porter, who joined the Blue Raiders from Houston, Texas this summer. He chatted with MT Staff Writer Sam Doughton after practice earlier this summer, talking about coming to Murfreesboro, his bowling ability off the court and whether any barbecue compares to Texas brisket.
Why did you pick Middle Tennessee?
I felt like it was a great fit for me. The system, coaching, living area, I was surrounding myself with good people. When I came on my visit, I felt like it was home.
Who do you model your game after?
Devin Booker, Ja Morant, Damian Lillard, a lot of those guys right there.
What has been your first impression of MT?
It was a little different. But meeting new guys, it was very good. Getting to know each other. Everything fell into place, it felt smooth.
Who has taught you the most about the game of basketball?
Probably Miss Tramina (Jones), it started off when I was six years old, going from the football team to the AAU team. She taught us a lot there and made me fall in love with the game of basketball at a young age.
What's our favorite thing to do off the court?
All I do is work out, but I do go bowling every now and again. (My best score) is probably 150, or something like that. It's cool, it's straight.
What are your goals for this season?
First is the team goal, try to make the national tournament. That's the main goal. (Personally), play good for my teammates and make an impact for my team.
If you could go back in time and relive any moment in basketball history, what moment would you pick?
Probably one of my high school games where I scored 41 points. It was one of my best basketball experiences.
You're from Texas, and of course there's a big barbeque debate among all the Southern States. How does Tennessee barbecue rank compare to Texas barbecue?
It's not messing with Texas. *laughs* I'll tell you that. It's almost definitely not.
Is barbecue just brisket for you, or can it be any other type of meat?
It can be any other type of meat.
