MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee Track & Field's long legacy of success has found its new leader with the promotion of Keith Vroman to Head Coach of the Blue Raider Track and Field Program, announced by Director of Athletics Chris Massaro on Tuesday.
Vroman will take on a new title for his 20th season as a member of the Middle Tennessee staff in the 2022-23 season, after serving as the top assistant coach and Head Cross Country coach for the late Dean A. Hayes. During his 19 years with the program, Vroman has recruited and coached 17 First-Team All-Americans to Middle Tennessee, while winning 17 conference titles while a member of the Blue Raider coaching staff.
"Coach Vroman's long history of success spoke for itself during the interview process, and he quickly became our first choice for the job," Massaro said. "The 19 years he spent learning from Coach Dean Hayes here in Murfreesboro, alongside his track record recruiting and training elite athletes during that time, stood out to everyone on the search committee."
Vroman has been named Conference USA Coach of the Year in Cross Country seven times during his tenure overseeing the Blue Raider distance runners and has won five of the last six C-USA titles in cross country. Student Athletes he has recruited and coached at Middle Tennessee have won 102 individual conference titles during his tenure between the Sun Belt and C-USA.
During the 2021-22 school year, Vroman's Cross Country teams swept the C-USA Championships in the fall, and had multiple athletes earn three separate All-American honors across all three track & field seasons. Vroman has served as the interim head coach for the track & field program since Dean Hayes' passing in January 2022.
"I want to thank Dr. Sidney McPhee, Chris Massaro and the search committee for trusting me to continue the long legacy of success we have at Middle Tennessee Track & Field," Vroman said. "I would also like to thank Dean Hayes for his 19 years of mentorship and getting me ready for this job. I hope to continue his legacy alongside that of the program he built."
The USTFCCCA South Region Coach of the Year in cross country in 2017, Vroman has coached 29 All-Region performers and 92 All-Conference performances in Cross Country during his time leading the MT XC program, taking the Blue Raiders to the NCAA Championships three times. Athletes he has recruited and coached currently hold 35 school records at Middle Tennessee.
Vroman graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 2000. He later earned a M.A. in Health Education and an M.S. in Physical Education from EKU in 2003, both earned while serving as a Graduate Assistant for Eastern Kentucky's Track & Field Program.
