MTSU finishes non-conference slate with 4-0 loss to Vanderbilt

Commodores avenge last year’s upset by the Blue Raiders
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—Middle Tennessee was looking to harness some of the magic from its upset over in-state foe Vanderbilt from last season on Sunday at home to close out non-conference play, but that wasn't to be as the Commodores beat the Blue Raiders 4-0.
MTSU was able to outshoot Vanderbilt in the first half three shots to two, however, both Vanderbilt shots resulted in goals by Raegan Kelley, who scored in the 12' and 38'. The Commodores would eventually tack on two more in the second half and also finished their non-conference schedule having allowed just one goal by securing the shutout.
Middle Tennessee heads into Conference USA play with a 2-4-1 record with wins over Mississippi Valley State and Austin Peay, both of which came from within the Dean Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
By the Numbers
3 - The number of players tied for the team lead in goals thus far. Junior Eleanor Gough, freshman Manon Lebargy and sophomore Kirstine Lykke have all tallied a pair of goals this season.
89:76 - The ratio to which the Blue Raiders have outshot opponents so far this season.
Rhoden's Roundup
"The nonconference slate is about two things: giving ourselves an opportunity to position ourselves later on in the postseason with a possible at-large bid and to prepare us for conference play," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "While we'd definitely hope for a better result, playing teams like Vanderbilt and Ole Miss serve a purpose. We have a lot of young kids that we kind of threw to the wolves and I'm pleased with how they've handled it. We're going to make sure the kids recover this week and we will evaluate everything in nonconference as a staff and get ready for UAB."
