MTSU Tames the Columbia Lions in a Four-Set Battle

Rhoda tied a 25-point era record with nine service aces to go along with 16 kills
QUEENS, N.Y. — The Middle Tennessee volleyball team took on the Columbia Lions at the Red Storm Invitational hosted by St. John's on Friday. The Blue Raiders made quick of the first two sets but had to battle for the win as the Lions forced a fourth.
The Blue Raiders (10-2, 0-0 C-USA) tamed the Columbia Lions (3-5, 0-0 IVY) in their first meeting ever, 3-1 (25-14, 25-9, 25-20, 25-21). This win ties them for the second-fastest start in program history with 10 wins through 12 matches. The Blue Raiders outhit the lions .372 to .136 in the four-set win. Middle Tennessee also out-blocked and out-served Columbia.
Freshman Adri Rhoda followed up a career-best performance on the attack this morning with a career-best serving performance, racking up a 25-point rally scoring era record nine service aces to go along with her team-leading 16 kills on a .452 attack percentage. Senior Kaylee Oscarson was not far behind with 14 kills on a .565 attack percentage.
By the Numbers
.524: The Blue Raiders hit a match-high .524 in set two and had a 90% sideout to dominate the set.
9: Rhoda tied the previous single-match record for the new-scoring era with nine aces, doing so in less sets. Dora Peonia is the only other Blue Raider to hit home nine, doing so in five sets against Louisiana Tech.
100: Senior Marley Banton was able to hit home career-service ace number 100. She is now the second player to reach that milestone in the new-scoring era and is only five away from tying for first with 105 service aces.

The Blue Raiders are back tomorrow to close out the Red Storm Invitational. The match is scheduled to play at 1:00 p.m. and timing will depend on the match before it. The match will be streamed on either ESPN3 or FloSports.
